Being given 'Environment' as the title for the task of my A2 exam, I was immediately drawn to focusing on the environmental issues our planet currently faces. With the constant worsening of global warming, many people, scientists and those often employed by commercial corporations themselves are still believing it to be a 'myth'. Recently appointed U.S President, Donald Trump, believes global warming to be a 'hoax' saying it 'was created by and for the Chinese." His reason being "to make the U.S manufacturing company non-competitive". Under President Obama, the United States government persuaded China to announce important pledges in the fight against climate change. They pledged to harvest 20 percent of their energy from non-fossil fuelled sources. Furthermore, Chinese President Xi Jinping said: 'Tackling climate change is a shared mission for mankind. Let us join hands to contribute to the establishment of an equitable and effective global mechanism on climate change." Through having a great passion towards the environment, and the surrounding political issues. these statements, and many more similar views have been a stimulus to inspire some initial ideas of mine. I would like to explore involving film, collage and an installation piece in a final outcome that focuses on the current environmental issues we face. Nature related artists I have began to research have been the likes of mixed media artist: Letha Wilson. Her minimalist collage and abstract work tackles the duality of man-made and nature through combining urban and natural materials. Furthermore exploring the relationship between man and nature is Italian conceptual artist, Giussepe Penone . I am particularly interested in his larger installations which have incorporated real trees. Similarly to Letha Wilson, his work questions how the human hand imprints upon the natural world. With both these artists in mind, I hope to be able to replicate these themes through my own style and voice.
Finally, with a particular interest in the Dada movement, I may want to integrate some collage and sculptural elements of the post modernism era into my final piece. With pioneers of Dada being the likes of Hannah Hoch , Man Ray and Max Ernst, I aim to use the themes and ideas of their work as influences when working toward a final outcome.
